Description:  Cyclic neutropenia is a recessive pluripotent stem cell disease that affects both short and long-haired collies. This disease is also known as Cyclic Hematopoiesis or “Gray Collie Syndrome”. Dogs affected by cyclic neutropenia appear visibly lighter than healthy siblings as well as merle-colored puppies. Cyclic neutropenia is a disease that affects neutrophils that are an integral part of the dog’s immune system. Every 10-12 days, the dog experiences a dramatic decrease in the number of neutrophils circulating in its bloodstream, making it very susceptible to infection. Often affected, diarrhea, fever, joint pain or other symptoms associated with eye, respiratory or skin infections may occur. There may also be bleeding episodes. Unfortunately, most affected dogs die as a puppy, and even with the best care, the dog lives to a maximum age of 2-3 years.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Mutation: insertion single A in exon 21 of the AP3B1 gene

Sample: EDTA whole blood (1.0 ml) or 2 buccal brushes. For official purposes, the confirmation of dog’s identity by Veterinarian is recommended.
