Description: Episodic Falling Syndrome is a genetic disorder, which appears in Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed. The genetic cause of this disease is a deletion in gene BCAN. EFS was not detected in other breeds yet. An affected dog begins to show symptoms between 5 months and 3 years of age. EFS causes in affected dogs a loss of muscle control following periods of extreme exercise. The seizures often begin with rocking, followed by the hind limbs becoming weak. The types of attacks are individual; some will continue to attempt to retrieve, dragging their hind legs along, and others will be totally unable to move, acting disoriented.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Mutation: 15.7 kbp deletion in BCAN gene

Sample: EDTA whole blood (1.0 ml) or 2 buccal brushes. For official purposes, the confirmation of the dog’s identity by Veterinarian is recommended.
