Description:  JME is a form of epilepsy characterized by sudden myospasms or jerk-like electrical shocks. Seizures can occur at any time, often occur when the dog is resting or falling asleep may also be caused by sudden exposure to bright light. Most dogs have seizures daily and some dogs may have up to 150 short seizures per day. Although they are commonly diagnosed at the age of 6 months, the puppies were diagnosed less than 6 weeks of age or older than 18 months. Up to 15% of the Rhodesian Ridgebacks tested are carriers for the gene mutation responsible for JME.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Mutation: c.564_567delAGAC in exon 2 of the DIRAS1 génu

Sample: EDTA whole blood (1.0 ml) or 2 buccal brushes. For official purposes, the confirmation of the dog’s identity by Veterinarian is recommended.
